- The Republic of Benin, the country of Occidental Africa, situated on the bay of Guinea, lined in the North by Burkina Faso and by Niger, in the East by Nigeria and on the West by Togo. Protectorate in 1894, then French colony of the Dahomey, Benin reached the complete independence in 1960, under the naming republic of the Dahomey, before taking its current name in 1975. The country covers a surface of 112 622 km2 It extends over 670 km, of the river Niger in the rib Atlantic, 126 km long. The official capital is Porto Novo; Cotonou being the political and economic capital
