Cape Verde (Cabo Verde in Portuguese), island country, called officially republic of Cape Verde, situated in the Atlantic Ocean, in more than 500 km in the wide of the Green cap, the most Occidental point of Africa. The archipelago is constituted by ten islands and by five islands. In the North, islands in the wind ( Barlavento) include Santo Antão, São Vicente, São Nicolao, Sal and Boa Vista. In the South, São Tiago (or Santiago), Defied, Fogo and Maio forms islands under the wind ( Sotavento). The republic of Cape Verde covers a total surface of 4 033 km2. The capital is Praia. It was the first African State to know a real political alternation at the conclusion of democratic elections, in January, 1991.
