- Islamic federal republic of the Comoro Islands, country situated in the Indian Ocean, in the north entrance of the canal of Mozambique, and including the islands of Grande-Comore (or Ngazidja), Mohéli ( Mwali) and Anjouan ( Nzwani). The archipelago of the Comoro Islands, bridge between Africa, Madagascar and Near East, counts a fourth island, Mayotte (or Maoré). This one, at the conclusion of a referendum during which the other islands chose independence, preferred to remain under French sovereign power. The republic of the Comoro Islands, of which the capital, Moroni, is situated on Grande-Comore, covers a surface of 1 862 km2.
