- Republic of Zimbabwe, country of southern Africa, lined in the North by Zambia, in the East by Mozambique, in the South by South Africa and in the southwest by Botswana. Zimbabwe covers a surface of 390 759 km2. The capital is Harare. Rhodesia's ancient British colony, Zimbabwe reached the independence only in 1980 after a long conflict, activated(started) in 1965 after the white colonists had broken with United Kingdom, and at the conclusion of which the black majority reached finally power. The country was renamed then symbolically Zimbabwe in reference to prestigious archeological site of the same name.
