- Brazil, Federal Republic and bigger State of South America. It covers near half of the surface of the South American continent. Lined in the East and in the North by the Atlantic Ocean, its neighbours are, in the North, Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam and French Guyana. On the West, they are Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru, in the northwest, Colombia and in the South, Uruguay. Only Chile and the Equator have no common border with Brazil in South America. With a surface of 8 511 966 km2, Brazil takes place in the fifth world row behind Russia, China, Canada and the United States. It stretches of the North in the South on a maximal length about 4 345 km and on a maximal largueur of is in the West of 4 330 km. The Atlantic coast is part most densément populated, with notably São Paulo's big metropolises and Rio de Janeiro. The capital, Brasília, whose population was estimated in 1991 at 1 841 028 inhabitants, is in more than 1 000 km inside lands. Ancient Portuguese colony, Brazil is notably the first world producer of coffee and possesses important mineral resources.
