- The Falkland Islands (Falkland Islands in English, Islas Malvinas in Spanish) or Falkland Islands, form an overseas territory the United Kingdom (Overseas Territory of the Falkland Islands). They are asserted by Argentina (which also asserts that these islands bear officially the name of Falklands (Malvinas)). The capital is Port Stanley.
The islands were seen by a Spanish forwarding in 1520
They were occupied by sailors of Saint-Malo (Inhabitants of Saint Malo, from where the name of the islands) at the XVIIIe century, who were expelled by the Spaniards in 1766. They remained almost uninhabited before Argentina does not install a penal settlement in 1820 there.
The United Kingdom conquered them in 1833 but Argentina maintained the principle of its sovereignty. A naval battle took place with broad archipelago during the First World War, December 8, 1914. After tensions, Argentina invades the islands in 1982, but was driven out by it by the British response at the end of the war of the Falklands.
