- Dominican, Republic, country of the Antilles situated in the oriental part of the island of Haiti of which she occupies two thirds, rest of the island being constituted with the republic of Haiti. The country is limited to the North by the Atlantic Ocean, in the East by Mona's canal, which separates it from Porto Rico, and in the South by the Caribbean Sea. Of a surface of 48 730 km2, the country includes several bordering islands, of which Beata and Saona. The capital and more big city is Saint-Domingue.
