- The Philippines, officially republic of the Philippines, country and archipelago situated in the northeast of Insulinde, in Southeast Asia. Situated in 1 210 km east of the coasts of Viêtnam, the Philippines are separated from Taiwan, in the North, by the strait of Luçon. The republic is limited in the East by the sea of the Philippines, to the South by the sea of Celebes and on the West by South China Sea. The country constitutes a group of more than 7 100 islands, with which two, Luçon in the North and Mindanao in the South, cover 70 p. 100 of the territory. Among the two is situated the group of Visayas of which the main islands are Samar, Negros, Palawan, Panay, Mindoro, Leyte, Cebu, Bohol and Masbate. The island of Palawan is isolated on the West with the archipelago. The Philippines cover a global surface of 300 000 km2. Manilla is the capital and most big city of the country.
