- Democratic socialist republic of Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, island country of the Indian Ocean situated in the southeast of India, from which it is separated by the strait of Palk and the bay of Mannar. The island measures about 440 km in length, and its maximal width reaches 220 km. The surface is of 66 000 km2. The capital and the most important city of the island is Colombo. Sri Jayavardhanapura ( Kotte), in the South of Colombo, is the seat of the Parliament.
