- England, left main clause of the island of Great Britain and United Kingdom. England occupies all the part of the island east of the Wales and to the South of the Scotland. Unified under shape of an independent monarchy in the X-th century, it gained during the history control on the rest of the island, on the islands Britishs and on a vast continent, becoming the centre of one of the biggest empires of the history. London, the capital, most big city and the main port of England, counts 6 700 000 inhabitants. It is also the capital and the seat of the Commonwealth of Nations. England has the shape of a triangle of which the summit is the mouth of the river Tweed, on border with the Scotland. The oriental side is lined by the North Sea, the Occidental side by the Irish Sea, the Wales and the Atlantic Ocean. The base of the triangle faces in La Manche and in Pas-de-Calais. The country covers 131 760 km2, is 57 p. 100 of the surface of Great Britain and 54 p. 100 of that of United Kingdom. This total surface includes islands Scilly ( the Scilly Isles), situated in the southwest of the point of Land End, at the end of Cornwall, island of Wight, in the wide of the south rib, and the island of Man, in Irish Sea, between England and Ulster.
