- Aserbaidschan, officially Azerbaijdanian Republic (in Turkish, Azärbayjan Respublikasi), Situated in oriental Transcaucasia (to see the Caucasus). Aserbaidschan is limited to the North by Russia, to the northwest by Georgia, on the West by Armenia, to the South by Iran and in the East by the Caspian Sea. Aserbaidschan is the ancient republic of the USSR. Become an independent State in 1991, it adhered to the Community of the independent States ( CIS ). The country extends over a surface of 86 600 km2. The capital is Baku. Aserbaidschan contains on the West the autonomous region of Haut-Karabagh (4 400 km2) and in the southwest the autonomous republic of Nakhichevan (5 500 km2). Situated between Armenia and Iran, this one is separated from the rest of Aserbaidschan by a narrow portion of Armenian territory. Since 1990, an armed conflict sets Aserbaidschan in Armenia. It has for stake the fastening of the Armenian enclave of Haut-Karabagh with the republic of Armenia.
