- Finland (in Finnish Suomi), officially republic of Finland, State of northerly Europe, lined in the North by Norway, in the East by Russia, in the South and in the southwest by the Baltic Sea (bay of Finland in the South, the Gulf of Buthnia in the southwest), and on the West by Sweden. Finland is a Scandinavian country and near a third of its territory is situated in the North of the Arctic Circle. The total surface of Finland is of 337 032 km2. In the southwest of the country, in the Baltic Sea, Ahvenanmaa's archipelago (islands of Åland) includes 6 500 islands. Helsinki, the capital, is most big city of the country.
