- Italy (in Italian, Italia), officially Italian Republic, country of the Southern Europe, lined in the North by Switzerland and Austria, in the East by Slovenia and the Adriatic Sea, in the South by the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, on the West by the Tyrrhenian Sea, the sea Ligurienne, the Mediterranean Sea and in the northwest by France. Sicily (25 708 km2), Sardinia (24 090 km2) and Elba (224 km2) are the main islands of it. Two small independent States are enclosed in the territory: the republic of San Marino, situated on the verge of Émilie-Romagne and Marche, and the Vatican City, on the right bank of the Tiber, in the Roman capital. The total surface of the country is of 301 278 km2 and Rome is the capital.
