- Serbia (in Serbian - Croatian, Srbija), republic of the southeast of Europe, situated in the Balkans, being a part of the Federal republic of Yugoslavia, lined in the North by Hungary, in the East by Rumania and Bulgaria, in the South by the Macedonia, in the southwest by Albania, on the West by Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina, in the northwest by Croatia. Ancient republic within the federative socialist Republic of Yugoslavia, Serbia constitutes since 1992, with Montenegro, the Federal republic of Yugoslavia ( RFY). It contains the formerly autonomous provinces of Kosovo, in the South, and Voïvodine, in the North, and covers a total surface of 88 361 km2; the capital is Belgrade.
