- Slovenia (in Slovenian Slovenija), officially republic of Slovenia, country of oriental Europe, situated in the peninsula of the Balkans, lined in the North by Austria and Hungary, in the East and in the South by Croatia, in the southwest by the Adriatic Sea and on the West by Italy. The country covers a surface of 20 254 km2. The capital is Ljubljana. The ancient constituent republic of the federative socialist Republic of Yugoslavia, Slovenia declared one-sidedly its independence on June 25, 1991.
