- Irlande, république d', officiellement république ou État libre d'Irlande (en gaélique, Poblacht nah-Éireann), pays occupant le nord-ouest et le sud de l'île d'Irlande dans l'océan Atlantique, à l'ouest de la Grande-Bretagne dont elle est séparée par la mer d'Irlande et le canal Saint George. La république d'Irlande, dont la capitale est Dublin, couvre 70 280 km2 sur les 84 000 km2 de superficie totale de l'île. Indépendant depuis 1921, après sept siècles de domination britannique contre laquelle s'est forgée l'identité nationale, le pays comprend les provinces historiques de Leinster, Munster et Connacht ainsi que trois des neuf comtés d'Ulster. Les six autres comtés de cette province forment l'Irlande du Nord, qui fait partie du Royaume-Uni de Grande-Bretagne et d'Irlande du Nord.
